Dear Friends,

Do you ever have trouble thinking of names for your stories? I do. Now I leave the title until I've finished writing the story, because sometimes I can see a good title somewhere inside the story. But that doesn't always work.

Mind you, I do have other things to think about. For example, one of my cats likes to sleep on my office chair. I try to be polite. I try to sit on the very edge of the chair so I won't disturb him. Do you know what he does? He sticks his claws into my bottom. Usually, I tell him what I think of such nasty behaviour and then I go and get another chair for myself.

The cats aren't always nasty. Lucky, the fluffy grey cat who likes to sleep on top of the computer, often reaches down to give me a purry kiss or to pat me with his paw. The only problem with that is I can't see the computer screen when he's stretched across it. Tui, a black and white cat who is tall and skinny, thinks that I need feeding. He sometimes comes in with a little snack - a dead mouse or lizard for my lunch. He thinks I'm very silly when I go "UGGH!" and very wasteful when I throw his snack out the window.

Joy and a young friend share a moment Having seven cats who each want to be the only cat with me, can be difficult. There are all kinds of quarrels. Little quarrels usually mean hissing across the room. The arguments become more serious when they start yowling and put their tails in the air. Sometimes, only sometimes, they pounce on each other and bits of fur fly around the room.

I think that sensible writers keep goldfish.

But somehow, I can't imagine sleeping with goldfish curled up on my bed.

Much love from your friend,

Joy Cowley
